چکیده

Species of Pseudomonas accumulate gluconic and 2-ketogluconic acids when grown in a medium containing glucose (Norris and Campbell, 1949; Stubbs et al., 1940; Entner and Stanier, 1951). In addition, cell-free preparations of these organisms will convert glucose to 2-ketogluconic acid (Wood and Schwerdt, 1953; Claridge and Werkman, 1953). These reactions suggest a pathway for the dissimilation of glucose differing from the glycolytic route. Campbell and Norris (1950) present evidence for the absence of an Embden-Meyerhof scheme in Pseudomonas aerzginosa based upon the phosphorus distribution. However, Wood and Schwerdt (1952a) have found evidence for alternate routes of carbohydrate oxidation in Pseudomona fluorescens. The present report is concerned with the evidence for the presence of more than one pathway for the oxidation of glucose by P. aeruinosa.

Regulation of alternate peripheral pathways of glucose catabolism during aerobic and anaerobic growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Glucose may be converted to 6-phosphogluconate by alternate pathways in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Glucose is phosphorylated to glucose-6-phosphate, which is oxidized to 6-phosphogluconate during anaerobic growth when nitrate is used as respiratory electron acceptor. Mutant cells lacking glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase are unable to catabolize glucose under these conditions. The mutant cells uti...

Role of orFD Pseudomonas aeruginosa H103 Gene in Glucose Uptake

Background:Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a gram negative non facultative bacterium and one of the members of normal flora in different sites of body in healthy humans.this bacterium can resist in fluids and hospital environments for a long time.Pseudomonas aeruginosa has two systems for glucose uptake:a low affinity oxidative pathway and a high affinity phosohorylative pathway.Although the role of ...

Effect of divalent cations on the uptake and oxidation of substrates by Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Evidence is presented that Zn(2+) and certain other multivalent cations inhibit the uptake and oxidation of substrates by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and by other bacterial cells. Tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane augmented this effect. Inhibition by these multivalent cations could be prevented by incubation of cellular suspensions of P. aeruginosa in phosphate buffer. In the case of other microorgani...

Carbohydrate Oxidation by Pseudomonas Fluorescens Ii. Mechanism of Hexose Phosphate Oxidation* by W. A. Wood

Glucose oxidation by Pseudomonas Jluorescens (1) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (2) has been shown to proceed via gluconate to 2-ketogluconate without the involvement of phosphorylated intermediates. 2-Ketogluconate is oxidized further in growing cultures (3) and resting cell suspensions (4), but attempts to obtain dried cell preparations or cell-free extracts which oxidize 2-ketogluconate have bee...
